Helmets are responsible for 5 things. Protection, ventilation, keeping drag to a minimum, storing sunglasses, and being the cherry atop your Lycra covered cake. The new Oakley ARO5 helmet ticks off all of the boxes when it comes to doing its job.

I make a point of getting a new helmet each year for a couple of reasons. The first of which is safety. Helmets are not the most durable of items and when it comes to the amount of travel that each helmet sees, they can have a few dents in them by years end. The second of which is  pure style. New helmets get released each year, colors may come and go but one thing is certain, we should all be wearing our helmets.

Helmets have gone from being optional to a necessary piece of equipment. In 1985, a movie called American Flyers was released. Every race scene showed riders wearing helmets. From the Cinelli Hairnets worn by the Sommers brothers to the Bell Touring helmets worn by the Soviets, every racer was wearing their choice of brain bucket despite a clear lack of technology.

Strapping on the ARO5, I feel like a freaking badass going to war on whatever ride I choose that day. Recovery ride on the docket?

HELL FREAKING YEAH I’M GOING TO LOOK LIKE A BADASS WHILE SPINNING AT 15MPH IN MY LITTLE RING ON PERFECTLY FLAT ROAD!

Heading out to the Nichols ride with god knows how many miles of rollers over Mulholland Highway?

YOU KNOW THAT I’M GOING TO SAVE AS MANY DAMN WATTS AS I CAN WHILE I GET DROPPED FROM THE LEAD GROUP ON THE FIRST CLIMB OF THE DAY!

Fun day riding around with my friends?

OF COURSE I’M GOING TO STARE THEM DOWN A MILE OUT FROM THE CAFÉ BEFORE ATTACKING WITH MY GLASSES IN MY HELMET SO THEY CAN SEE MY EYES OF FURY!

Ultimately, this helmet does a damn good job at doing what it is intended to do. No I can’t feel the aero benefit, but I can definitely hear it. This helmet is super quiet compared to the last lid I sported. It keeps my Oakley Radar EV’s stored nicely (clearly I’m a fan of Oakley product). Lastly I am damn sure it will do it’s best protecting my noggin from impact because it has the latest MIPS helmet tech! What more do you need when you are trying to look as good as Marcel Kittel, be as fast as Mark Cavendish, or just be an all around good dude like Ian Boswell?

For me it’s all about the style since I’m slow AF and this helmet doesn’t stop feeding my ego when I’m around someone new.

Cheers to that!
